Understanding Ticket Availability vs Sold Quantity:
Ticket availability and sold quantity are calculated at different stages of the purchase flow. While availability reflects the current inventory status at that moment, tickets are considered sold only after successful payment confirmation.
The scenarios below explain how this difference may be observed during ticket purchase.
1. Why can a ticket appear available but later show as unavailable?
Ticket availability is evaluated in real time, whereas sold quantity is updated only after payment completion. If another attendee completes payment first, the count may change even if the ticket was available moments earlier.
2. Why can the same ticket be added to multiple carts?
Adding a ticket to the cart does not affect the sold quantity. Until payment is completed, the ticket remains part of available inventory, which allows multiple users to add it to their carts simultaneously. The sold count updates only for the first successful payment.
3. Why can checkout fail even though availability was shown earlier?
Availability may change while payment is being processed. If the remaining ticket is sold by another user during this time, the system updates the sold quantity and prevents additional purchases to avoid overselling.
4. Why does availability change when selecting quantity or proceeding to payment?
Availability is revalidated at multiple stages to ensure the sold quantity remains accurate. If inventory changes between selection and final confirmation, the latest availability is applied before completing the transaction. However, in rare, high-concurrency scenarios where multiple payments are processed, a minimal variance between availability and sold quantity may occur.
5. Why isn’t inventory locked immediately when added to the cart?
To maintain system performance and fair access, inventory is not locked at the cart stage. Tickets are officially removed from availability and added to sold quantity only after successful payment confirmation.
